I have enjoyed making wood carvings since the 1970's. My professional background is in education and art but a love of wood and sculpture has always been at the center of everything I do.
Long before I had any proffessional training my father shared a new set of chisels with me. I was fascinated by them. I began with a few functional items(scoops, doorknockers) and was hooked! In addition to including it in my curriculum as an art teacher in four school districts and two art centers, I have made hundreds of carvings for private collectors, art competitions, churches, and munincipalities.
In a word, I try to bring 'life' to whatever I create. Realism and detail can be achieved much more easily that the elusive force of grace and life that makes a work of art timeless. Of course, I don't always achieve it, but this is what I strive for.
